1st, 2nd & 4th Grade Art: An extension of history class

Our first- and second-grade students have been studying indigenous dwellings in history class. Mrs. McDaniel, JHCA lower school art teacher, coordinated a Mexican themed art class project. Students painted scenes in the style of traditional Mexican art on vellum to represent the thin paper historically made from animal skins. These scenes were then mounted on paper that students painted with watercolors to resemble tanned leather.
In Ms. Lyon’s history class, the fourth-graders have been learning about the rise of Islam, the Islamic empire, and how Muslim religous beliefs influenced traditional Islamic art. Mrs. McDaniel coordinated an Islamic tile project in art class to join their recent units on lines and color. In the unit on color, students learned about value, complementary and tertiary colors, and warm versus cool colors. They had fun digging through a bin of paint chips to find and categorize colors for their projects.

Mrs. McDaniel said, “I want students to eventually be able to see a color in a master painting and say ‘that’s a warm red’ or ‘that’s a cool violet.’ They need to understand this so they can recognize an artist’s intentional use of color in a piece.”
