Classical Education

Academic Program

Jackson Hole Classical Academy’s curriculum strives to give students a rich and meaningful academic course of study. The purpose of the curriculum is to shape students’ minds and hearts to love what is true, good, and beautiful.

The overview of the curriculum follows the classical paradigm of grammar, logic, and rhetoric. These three learning stages are often referred to as The Trivium. Each stage reflects a period of a student’s development—roughly corresponding to elementary school, middle school, and high school. Each stage has a unique goal. These goals build on one another and culminate in a flourishing and educated young man or woman.

The Trivium

Grammar stage students have a quick memory and find joy in repeating or chanting various facts, rhymes, and lists. They acquire a good deal of important facts easily, and at Jackson Hole Classical Academy, are inspired with a sense of wonder and imagination in all disciplines of study. In these grades, students learn the grammar, or building blocks, of subjects. The grammar stage involves students from Kindergarten to fourth grade and takes place in the lower school at JHCA.

The logic stage consists of the middle years of education, grades 5-8 at JHCA. Students in this stage begin to ask “why?” very frequently. They develop powers of reasoning and argumentation. Abstract thinking becomes possible, especially toward the end of the logic stage. Students begin to form arguments by drawing on what they have learned and applying logical reasoning. At JHCA, students in fifth and sixth grade study in the lower school, then move to the upper school for seventh and eighth grade.

The rhetoric stage is about independent expression. At JHCA, students continue to study all the subjects but see the interplay between them. Students use their knowledge to synthesize and create. A JHCA student who has completed the rhetoric stage ultimately develops a personal outlet for expression, whether in the arts or sciences.

Lower School

The lower school at JH Classical Academy builds habits of learning in students. Students are inspired with a sense of wonder and imagination in all disciplines. Every subject uses memorization to fill the curious young minds with the information that they crave. Students leave the lower school as they begin to enter the logic stage and think logically.
