Geography Bee

For the first time, Jackson Hole Classical Academy is participating in the National Geographic Bee this year.  The bee is an exciting opportunity for students in grades 4-8 to show off their geographical expertise and win recognition for their knowledge.

Since 1989, the National Geographic Society has sponsored the National Geographic Bee to promote geography awareness in the United States.  The bee is open to students in Grades 4-8 in all 50 states and in American territories.
At the final round of the bee, held in May in Washington, DC, champions from each state and the American territories compete for the title of National Champion.   At the national level, college scholarships are awarded for the top three finishers.  The bee focuses on various aspects of American and world geography, with questions which incorporate earth science, current events, and history.

At the school level, the bee begins with classroom competitions.  Here at JHCA, the 4th-8th grade history classes each held a classroom competition.  There were seven rounds of questions in the classroom competitions, and students who got 6 or 7 of the questions correct advanced to the school bee.
The following students earned a spot in the school geography bee:   Cotter Friess (8th), Aaron Heindel (8th), Andrew Howard (7th), Paschall McDaniel (7th), Madeleine Moore (7th), Georgiana Mueller (5th), Harper Scott (6th), Hanne Somers (8th), Ben Uptain (7th), and Katie Wylie (7th).

At the school geography bee, double-elimination is used to narrow the field to two finalists.   These finalists then compete in a championship round to determine the first and second place finishers.  The first, second, and third place finishers then receive certificates, and the first place finisher receivers a medal.

After the school bee, the first place finisher takes a written test to potentially qualify for the State Geography Bee on Friday, March 29, 2019.  One hundred finalists from across Wyoming are invited to participate at this statewide bee.  The winner of the state bee then advances to the national competition in Washington, DC in May.  Since Wyoming has a smaller population than all other states, the odds for qualifying in the Wyoming state bee are good for our school champion!

The Geography Bee at Jackson Hole Classical Academy took place on January 17th. The first round of questions was on states and capitals. A few rounds of questions thinned the ranks, and left a dramatic duel for 3rd place between Aaron Heindel and Andrew Howard. After going back and forth for seven questions Aaron clinched the 3rd place spot with the question: "Great Bear Lake is the largest lake entirely contained in which country?" The correct answer was "Canada."

Then Cotter Friess and Paschall McDaniel competed for the championship with the best of three questions. One of them was: "Darien National Park is the largest national park in which South American country?" The correct answer was "Panama." Cotter made it ahead by one question correct to get 1st place and the chance to go to the State Geography Bee.

Congratulations to all the competitors!
