School Governance

Head of School Update: Friday October 27, 2017

Dear JH Classical Academy Parents,

The JH Classical Academy Board gathered in Scottsdale, Arizona last weekend for an extended board meeting. We opened with a two hour discussion on Christopher Perrin’s “An Introduction to Classical Education” led by Dr. Kevin Roberts. That was the perfect launching point for a fine-tuning of our mission statement, led by Brent Hodges. A wise consultant, Dr. Gary Damore's, instructed us on board governance policies to secure the longevity and stability of our school. An institution is created when the founding members are gone and the vision lives beyond! So, it was an important weekend and an uplifting time with new partners in this work.
The mission of Jackson Hole Classical Academy is to cultivate within its students
the wisdom and virtue necessary to discover their God-given potential
and contribute to a flourishing and free society.

Cultivate.  Discover.  Contribute.  Those action verbs begin to articulate our theory of engagement with students for learning, growing, thinking, choosing and acting.  Ultimately, we want our students to begin the lifelong journey of acquiring wisdom and forming habits so that they can live flourishing and productive lives.   The journey takes courage and fortitude.  So, we pursue this vision within the Christian tradition that encourages us to know ourselves and to know God; to bear our humanness in light of His grace.

Some of the benefits of pursuing this mission within the classical model and in a small school setting are academic accountability, social maturity, conflict resolution, and teacher mentors.  Students are shaped by the curriculum and the integration between disciplines.  Students are also formed by relationships with teachers and the energy from those connections.  We added an intentional mentoring program for boys and girls in Grades 5-9 this year to increase compassionate bonding and to promote developmental growth.

With Halloween upon us, I wanted to clarify that JH Classical Academy encourages families to celebrate and enjoy their holiday traditions at home and in the community.  At school students are taught the history and significance of national and religious holidays such as Christmas, Easter, and Thanksgiving.  However, school is primarily a place of learning.  So, in keeping with our vision to create a culture of learning free from distractions, we do not spend valuable curricular time recognizing these celebrations.

Enjoy the biography of Dan Walker, our new Advancement & Finance Manager!  Dan was on hand last Monday to receive the Old Bill’s Fun Run check, which brings $91,000 to our school.

Thank you for your partnership,

Mrs. Polly J. Friess
