Hope: Keep your candle burning

At this week’s lower school opening ceremony, Ms. Frances Davis, 3rd grade teacher, spoke to students, parents, and faculty about the virtue of hope. She opened with a favorite quote from Anne of Green Gables, “Tomorrow is always fresh, with no mistakes in it yet.” Ms. Davis said the idea that our past does not need to limit our future allows us to move past daily failures with a resolve to do better next time. Speaking to the students, she gave an example of making a mistake in class and knowing your teacher will forgive you and let you start fresh every time. “It is the hope for a better future that allows one to begin each day with a renewed sense of purpose and desire,” she said.
To further illustrate this, Ms. Davis told a short story about the power of hope in rekindling the other virtues we’ve learned about in opening ceremonies. The story, “Four Candles in a Room,” is about four candles who represent peace, faith, love, and hope. The first three candles lament with each other over the current troubles they see in the world. One by one they become extinguished. As a young boy enters the room, he sees the extinguished candles and asks why they didn’t burn until the end. The fourth candle tells the boy, “Dear child, do not be sad. I am Hope and while I am burning you can light the rest of the candles again.” Then the child, with joy, takes the candle of Hope and relights the other candles of Peace, Faith, and Love.

Ms. Davis reminded students that during Holy Week, we keep the candle of hope burning. She said, “I hope you all keep your candles of hope lit because if this candle is burning brightly all the other candles can be re-lit to dispel the darkness, just as Christ dispelled the darkness when he died for our sins, and then conquered death.”
