Dr. and Mrs. Campbell join JH Classical Academy

Dr. Evan Campbell will join JH Classical Academy as our Music Teacher in Fall 2022 along with his wife, Julia, who will join as our Advancement Coordinator. Currently, Dr. Campbell is a visiting professor of Music Theory at the Crane School of Music at SUNY Potsdam in New York. Dr. Campbell has eleven years of teaching experience, and twenty-five years of vocal experience. Mrs. Campbell is currently an adjunct instructor of oboe at Grand Valley State University and has served as a teaching assistant, private music tutor, and administrative assistant at other universities.
Dr. Campbell holds a doctorate and master of arts in Music Theory from McGill University in Montreal. He earned his bachelor of music and classical guitar performance diploma from McMaster University in Ontario. Mrs. Campbell is a doctoral candidate at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in Oboe Performance and Literature. Additionally, she holds a master of music in Oboe Performance and a master of arts in Music Theory from the Schulich School of Music at McGill University, as well as a bachelor of arts in Music and a bachelor of science in Physics from Grand Valley State University in Michigan.

Dr. Campbell’s Ph.D. research on Claudio Monteverdi’s psalm and canticle settings was partly inspired by his Christian faith. He says, “I am cognizant of music’s role in a well-rounded classical education, and my pedagogy incorporates late-Renaissance and early-Baroque methods firmly rooted in the Trivium.” Dr. Campbell is excited to begin working with JHCA students and to “give students the very best music, even at the earliest age.”

During their recent visit to campus, Mrs. Campbell was impressed with the education that students receive at JHCA. She said, “JHCA shines as an example of what schools should provide—an education that inspires students to live virtuously.” She believes that learning and practicing music especially helps to cultivate the virtues of fortitude and temperance, and helps communities to flourish.

Dr. and Mrs. Campbell enjoy hiking, cooking, and composing music together. Dr. Campbell is especially looking forward to making music within the Jackson community, exploring nature, and learning how to fly fish while Mrs. Campbell is looking forward to learning about high-elevation gardening. She also can’t wait to visit Yellowstone.
