Strings Program

This year JH Classical Academy’s music program is expanding from choral, piano and guitar to include a new strings program, as well. Beginning next week, kindergarten through 4th grade students will learn general music and singing, and 7th and 8th grade students will continue to study classical guitar and piano, respectively. However, 5th and 6th grade students are in for a treat, as they will be the first classes to study violin at JH Classical Academy.
New music teacher Marc Powell has taught an extensive repertoire of instruments, but his speciality is string instruments, in particular cello. His teaching philosophy stems from the belief that every child has the innate ability to learn music, and Mr. Powell tries to make his music lessons as accessible as possible. Even in the younger grades, Mr. Powel says he aims to “focus on technique and make simple songs sound as beautiful as possible.”

Mr. Powell’s goal in the music classroom is to “educate amateur musicians who enjoy the art of music.” Even for those students who do not wish to continue studying music outside of school, Mr. Powell believes that music education is beneficial to mental development, exercising the whole brain at once as students are challenged to find patterns and make cross-brain connections while listening to and reading music.

Students who study violin this semester will be able to showcase their skills alongside choral performances and recitations at the Ceremony of Carols in December. Mr. Powell encourages students who are new to violin to have patience and enjoy the process of experimenting and learning this new instrument.
