Head of School Update: Sunday, May 17, 2020

Dear JH Classical Academy Parents,

We are closing in on the homestretch.  This Spring brought many challenges, but the end of school is in sight.  Our children continued to learn despite the turbulence, and they connected daily with teachers and peers despite required distancing.  New potential students shadowed our virtual classrooms, and it is exciting to grow our student body.  I know that most of us are tired and ready to finish virtual learning and give our children a needed summer break. We are so blessed to live in such a beautiful place where we can vacation at home and spend most of our time outdoors in safety and good health.
Here is the current plan to end our year at JH Classical Academy well:
  • Our 9th and 11th Grade high school students will end virtual learning on Friday, May 29th.  On Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday, June 1-3, their modified final exams will be administered on campus in the afternoon.
  • Our Kindergarten through 2nd Grade students will end virtual learning on Tuesday, June 2nd.   We plan to bring them on campus on Wednesday morning, June 3rd for closure with their teachers, to see the field house, and to enjoy a treat on the playground.
  • Our 3rd through 6th Grade students will end virtual learning on Wednesday, June 3rd. We plan to bring them on campus on Thursday morning, June 4th for closure with their teachers, to see the field house, and to enjoy a treat on the playground.
  • Our 7th and 8th Grade students will end virtual learning on Wednesday, June 3rd, too.  We plan to bring them on campus Thursday afternoon, June 4th for math final unit tests and for proper closure with their teachers.  Our 8th Graders will have a short Promotion Ceremony on Friday morning, June 5 from 10-11:00 AM.
As a reminder, we have a 4-day weekend over Memorial Day.  There is no school on Friday, May 22 or Monday, May 25th.  In summary:
  • High School students have 8 more days of virtual learning, and then 3 exam days, ending school on Wednesday, June 3rd.
  • Kindergarten through 2nd Grade students have 10 more days of learning, and then a final day for closure on campus to end school on Wednesday, June 3rd, too.
  • 3rd through 6th Graders have 11 more days of virtual learning, and then a final day of closure on campus to end school on Thursday, June 4th.
  • 7th and 8th Graders have 11 more days of virtual learning, and then a final day of a math final and closure on campus to end school on Thursday, June 4th.
  • 8th Grade Promotion will be held on Friday morning, June 5th at 10:00 AM and the school year concludes for everyone.
Our plan to bring students on campus in small, staggered groups for a short few hours is based on the Governor allowing school buildings to open on June 1, 2020, with proper protocol.   However, we do have to pay close attention to new ordinances or required exemption permissions, and we should restrict those who are deemed high risk from joining. Therefore, we will share the exact details for the above campus plans from June 1st through 5th as we approach that week.

We will continue to provide grace with grading and focus our 7-11th end-of-year testing on final unit assessments. Our request to begin 1:1 Lyceum on campus for students needing more support was granted, so please reach out to Coach Lunz or Ms. Koci if your child needs in-person time with a teacher over the next two weeks.  Some of you have already been contacted with 1:1 Lyceum meeting times.

Our community has pulled together during this unprecedented time.  Thank you for your dedication and commitment to learning and the grace you have extended to us.  I hope to see you all on campus at staggered times during that last week of school.  I look forward to greeting students and giving birthday books, extending a wave of thanks to parents, and wishing families a wonderful and healthy summer.  I’m in awe of God’s goodness and His provision during the past few months.

Warm regards,

Mrs. Polly J. Friess
