Cross Country Club

You might see a band of Jackson Hole Classical Academy t-shirts along the bike path after school. That's the middle school running club. Mrs. Walter and Mr. Sawyer have been coaching a stalwart band of students on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays. Practices run about an hour and include warm ups, endurance and tempo runs, stretching, and core workouts.

The JHCA team got their first taste of friendly competition at Old Bill's Fun Run. Their first official cross-country meet will take place in Afton at 4:00PM on Thursday September 19. Their season will close with a race in Shelley Idaho on September 27th.
Mrs. Walter and Mr. Sawyer are both eager to create a culture of running and fitness at JHCA. Mrs. Walter ran competitively in high school and college. In 2017 she was the fastest local woman in the Jackson Hole Marathon. Mr. Sawyer is also an avid runner who runs competitively in Jackson.

Thinking back on her own experience as a teenage runner, Mrs. Walter says, "The biggest thing about running is that it teaches confidence. You can always give more than you think. You always have more in you than you know."

Mr. Sawyer is optimistic about the team's progress so far. "It's been awesome to see the students improve so much in such a short period of time. We have students without a running background who have jumped into training with inspiring perseverance and enthusiasm. We're really looking forward to our first meet."
