Dear JH Classical Academy Parents,
 
In the middle of all our recent political "tribulations”, I had a short respite while attending a gathering of classical educators at Arizona State University. The Symposium was designed to enrich our understanding of the classical, liberal arts. Over 400 teachers and administrators learned about the theory and practice of classical teaching. We discussed how to revitalize teaching as the model of exemplary content and exceptional character.
 
By its very nature, Classical education is character education. As classical educators, we seek to integrate character and virtue into all aspects of our curriculum, pedagogy, and culture at JH Classical Academy. Amidst the turbulent climate of pop culture, the explosion of screen-time and technology, and the proliferation of radical educational theories, classical educators still read Great Books. We believe that reading great literature helps restore our relationship with ourselves, our friends, nature, and G
Written in elevated language, Great Books enrich our minds and introduce themes of enduring importance that are universally relevant. Reading these enables us to see the world through another’s eyes and comprehend other points of view. Great literature opens the imagination and trains the mind to be flexible. Good!
 
Humility. Gratitude. Wonder. Delight. Truly Great Books make us more human. There is truth, and we use questions to find it. In discussions of literature we identify assumptions, defend positions, probe motives, and make connections. All this provocation provides deeper reflection on the way things are, even if we don’t understand why. Truth is freedom. We govern ourselves best when we know ourselves and learn about God.
 
In our faculty study of Psalm 23 this year, we just reached the line, “Thou prepares a table before me, in the presence of my enemies.” Sometimes our trial doesn't disappear. Yet, even in the midst of those stresses, our Shepherd brings forth banquets with food and fellowship, providing relief. For me, the Symposium was just such a banquet.
 
Over Spring Break, the faculty is reading Madeleine L’Engle’s, “Walking on Water: Reflections on Faith & Art” to discuss together when we return. Have you selected a life-affirming book to read over Spring Break?
