Head of School Update: Friday March 2, 2018

Dear JH Classical Families,

We concluded our month focused on the cardinal virtue of Justice with a thoughtful reflection by 9th Grader Lily Lonneker.  Completely on her own, Lily researched the legal and moral definitions of justice and combined them to create a compass of how to treat others: to help the needy, to love our enemies, and to live justly. Three of our 9th Graders have thus far shared reflections with the entire student body. What an encouragement it is to see our young adults articulate important insights with poise and confidence!  Please encourage potential 8th & 9th Grade students to join our JH Classical Academy students for an Open House with mini-lessons from our teachers this Tuesday, March 6thfrom 8-10:30 AM.  Our students are eager to learn alongside more friends!
The Rev. Billy Graham was laid to rest today. While there are so many points I could highlight about his life, with the students I reflected on his ability to live beyond denominational differences and unify the Christian community.  The relationship between Protestant and Catholic communities is historically marked by conflict more than cooperation, by suspicion more than trust, and by ignorance more than understanding.  Billy Graham compelled us to avoid such conflicts between our religious communities and to explore patterns of working together to advance the one mission of Christ in diverse ways without any compromise to the truth.  He brought unity among people of different races, faiths, and nations during his lifetime, and comissioned all of us us to continue this important work through friendships and prayer.

I see evidence of unity in how we demonstrate God’s love to each other in our school, not just with words, but in deeds.  I see recognition that parents have the primary responsibility for the formation of their children, and that our school exists to support parents in exercising that responsibility.  I see us working together with parents to transmit to students our common moral foundations of honesty, respect, and diligence. It is good to act justly, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with our God. This is how Billy Graham lived his life and why he was recognized so broadly and so beautifully today.  I hope you have marked your calendars for our special assembly next Monday, March 12 at 2:10 PM with Shannon Sedgwick Davis, and advocate for justice and mercy for children in need.

Don't forget to read your children's report cards, which were posted on OwlNet this morning.  Our teachers take great care in writing narrative comments on your children's sense of wonder, depth of inquiry, and their habits and responsibilities, to support their letter grades. They look forward to discussing these evaluations with you at parent/teacher conferences this coming Friday, March 9th.
