Head of School Update: Friday September 15, 2017

Dear JH Classical Academy Parents,

Teachers commented all week on how happy they are to be back in the classroom teaching again.  Students told me me how much they love their new teachers and friends.  The first two weeks of school do focus on setting expectations, but there was a lot of joy in the building.  It is good to see our beloved school grow in size and stature.

On Monday mornings, I’ve been sharing how the quotes on the walls represent foundational aspects of our school.  The three theological virtues and the four cardinal virtues are now displayed in each classroom.  The theological virtues of “Faith, Hope, and Love” aim at serving God.  The four cardinal virtues of “Prudence, Justice, Temperance and Fortitude” guide our actions.  These seven virtues have been established for thousands of years as the most essential one, and we strive to learn more
about them throughout the year.
As you exit the front of our building, you’ll see the new Latin phrase: “Sum, Possum, Debeo, Volo.”  Charlotte Mason, an 19th Century British educator, focused on the fact that education shapes children’s minds, wills, emotions and actions.  She believed that teachers have two shaping tools in their hands as they work with children: good habits and noble ideas.  As we cultivate within students at JH Classical Academy good habits of thought and behavior, we build the foundation to support their learning and living out Mason’s motto: I am, I can, I ought, I will.

This coming Monday, I plan to share about the quote as you walk out the back door of our building: “Soli Deo Gloria.”  J.S. Bach wrote this phrase on his compositions to signify that he produced music for the sake of praising God.  At JH Classical Academy we are motivated and inspired by God’s glory.  I look forward to sharing clips of three of Bach's glorious musical selections with the students.

As a reminder, parents are welcome to join their children for lunch any day of the week.  We have so enjoyed
seeing so many parents attending our opening ceremonies in the morning.

Soli Deo Gloria,

Mrs. Polly J. Friess
