Head of School Update: Friday April 28, 2017

Dear JH Classical Academy Parents,

Chess is one of the most enduring and globally enjoyed games in history.  We know it provides infinite opportunities to improve critical thinking, problem solving, mental acuity and strategic planning. Additionally, we are seeing among our students that chess provides an opportunity to improve emotional intelligence, healthy competition, and an eagerness to learn.
Mr. Timothy Grupp, our chess instructor, held JHCA’s first chess competition yesterday with eight finalists from Grades 3-8: Scarlett Lustfield, Georgiana Mueller, Cotter Friess, Jackson and James Neishabouri, Peter Zabriskie, Sarah Tallerico and Cannon Mueller.  Congratulations to James, this year’s reigning Chess Champion!  Cotter earned second place by breaking his tie with Jackson in a 5-minute sudden-death speed match!

Impressive also was the sportsmanship witnessed among all the competitors and even the student body.  Every player showed great respect for their opponent and graciousness in winning and losing.  Their classmates watched the game silently to support their peers.  When the competitors returned to the classroom, they were greeted with a standing ovation.  It was a day at JHCA that left us teachers with a sense of accomplishment and joy.

Our virtue this month is citizenship.  Mrs. Landis reminded us last week that Paul says “our citizenship is in heaven” and we demonstrate obedience to God when we are obedient citizens in our communities on earth. Miss Porter explained that our role as citizens extends to stewardship of God’s creation and love for those He created.  At the core of this virtue is that we are called to care about every member of our community.

Here at Jackson Hole Classical Academy, we take every opportunity to educate the heart and the mind.  Our chess tournament yesterday was a beautiful example of this alignment!

Until the next match,

Mrs. Polly J. Friess
