In the Classroom: Music Program

When you hear a third grader singing Jubilate Deo outside school or in the playground, their enthusiasm is a result of the two dynamic and talented music teachers at JH Classical Academy, Miss Koci and Mrs. Landis. Together, they have created a rich program that teaches the three pillars of music training: theory, history, and performance. The results of this program were evident at last year’s beautiful Christmas and Evening of the Arts concerts shows. Already, the JHCA choir and music classes are preparing for this year’s Christmas Concert.

Students at JH Classical Academy learn the grammar, logic, and rhetoric of music through theory, history, and performance. Music theory is the language of music; students carefully study notation, transcription, and reading. In music history, students learn the biographies of composers from Mozart to Britten and how their music fit in the artistic and cultural period in which they lived. Some composers followed cultural movements while others sparked them! Students also listen to and analyze pieces of classical music. Music performance is grounded in voice training, with instruments incorporated in middle school. The music classroom is packed with xylophones, chimes, hand drums, and rhythm sticks, all of which build a sense of rhythm and tone. In the 7th and 8th grades, students move to guitar lessons with Mrs. Landis and Mr. O’Malley.

Both the students and the music faculty are excited about the Christmas program repertoire. Mrs. Landis says, “I’m looking forward to it very much; there will be fifteen pieces that students will perform. Some pieces will feature the chimes, while the choir will sing carols in several different languages. There may even be a guitar piece from the 7th and 8th grade!” In addition to the school performance, the choir will sing at three community concerts this season at a Church, the senior center, and Jackson Whole Grocer.

When asked what might be in store for JHCA’s music program in the coming years, Mrs. Landis said that she would like to eventually see a high school program with choir and chamber ensemble. Upcoming school performances may also feature students on instruments they study privately. In the future, the music program may add more instruments for classroom instruction. Voice instruction and music theory, however, will remain the bedrock of music education at JH Classical Academy.
Every week the students learn a new song, which they sing together with the faculty at opening assembly. Come join to hear and sing along! This week, the students sang the familiar hymn Amazing Grace.

“Amazing grace, how sweet the sound
That saved a wretch like me
I once was lost, but now am found
Was blind, but now I see.”
