Wisdom and The Serenity Prayer

Mrs. Polly Friess addressed the JHCA students and faculty during the last all-school opening ceremony of the year and continued our discussion on wisdom. Mrs. Friess walked students through the famed “Serenity Prayer,” and how this prayer can help guide our decision making.
The short prayer reads, “Lord, give me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference.” Mrs. Friess said that wisdom is the key virtue in figuring out our responsibilities and the control we have in various situations, especially when things do not go our way.

Mrs. Friess gave the students examples of situations they may face, and asked them to figure out what they could do about it. For example, the students agreed that a rain storm on a hike could not be changed, but being bored inside all day watching TV could be changed! Mrs. Friess reminded students that not all situations are that easy to figure out, but we should always remember that we are in control of our choices, even in situations that we cannot completely fix.

Mrs. Friess helped the students to memorize the prayer, and encouraged them to say it and use it throughout the summer to continue to grow in wisdom.
