Remembering Martin Luther King Jr.: The Power of a Good Education

Mr. Winters said that King’s father made sure he had an education that emphasized truth, goodness, and beauty, like the classical education students receive at JHCA. Mr. Winters said that after King “was thrown in jail for walking down the street, he began to write. This is why education is so important and why what you are learning here matters so much. While he sat in that jail, he began to think of all the things he had learned. He remembered the words of Augustine of Hippo, the greatest theologian since the Apostle Paul, which read, ‘An unjust law is no law at all.’” He filled his “Letter from a Birmingham Jail” with biblical references and quotations from great works of literature that he had memorized throughout his education. 

When King saw that unjust laws were destroying truth, goodness, and beauty in his country, he knew he had to do something about it, and he was able to because of his education. Mr. Winters told the students that, like King, their classical, Christian education can empower them to change the world.
