Remembering Martin Luther King Jr.: The Power of a Good Education

Mr. Nathan Winters, Executive Director of Family Policy Alliance of Wyoming, addressed the JHCA community at Monday’s opening ceremony to remember the work of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and the importance of a good education.
Mr. Winters said that King’s father made sure he had an education that emphasized truth, goodness, and beauty, like the classical education students receive at JHCA. Mr. Winters said that after King “was thrown in jail for walking down the street, he began to write. This is why education is so important and why what you are learning here matters so much. While he sat in that jail, he began to think of all the things he had learned. He remembered the words of Augustine of Hippo, the greatest theologian since the Apostle Paul, which read, ‘An unjust law is no law at all.’” He filled his “Letter from a Birmingham Jail” with biblical references and quotations from great works of literature that he had memorized throughout his education.

When King saw that unjust laws were destroying truth, goodness, and beauty in his country, he knew he had to do something about it, and he was able to because of his education. Mr. Winters told the students that, like King, their classical, Christian education can empower them to change the world.

About Mr. Winters

Nathan Winters grew up in Cheyenne, and after high school, he earned both his Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees from West Coast Baptist College.

He then returned to the state to serve as a pastor at First Baptist Church of Thermopolis for over 12 years. While in his role there, he was also on the board of Missionary Tech Team – a Texas-based ministry equipping missionaries and building hospitals and churches around the globe.  He also served locally as a member of the Hot Springs County Counseling Center board of directors.

In 2012, Nathan successfully ran for the Wyoming House of Representatives. He served on several vital committees overseeing issues ranging from economic development, mineral policy, agriculture, public lands, and program auditing. In his third term, he was elected chairman of the House Republican Caucus and was vice-chairman of the Judiciary Committee.

Nathan’s passion for the truth of God’s Word and his desire to see biblical citizenship demonstrated in both our government and our culture drive him every day. He daily puts these motivations to work as he strives to advance the mission of the Family Policy Alliance of Wyoming. Recently, Nathan returned to Graduate School to receive a second Master’s degree in Historical Theology, emphasizing Church history, philosophy, and ethics.

Family Policy Alliance of Wyoming is a Christian ministry that advances biblical citizenship, equips and elects statesmen, promotes pro-family policy, and serves an effective alliance, all committed to a shared vision. We envision a nation and states where God is honored, religious freedom flourishes, families thrive, and life is cherished.

Nathan and his wife, Christie, live in Cheyenne and are the parents of three children.
