Fifth-graders create cell models for science class

Students in Ms. Kirby Feaver’s 5th-grade science class have been studying the structures and functions of cells. In order to practice and apply what they’ve been learning, students were given two weeks to build models of plant and animal cells using household materials.
According to Ms. Feaver, science shifts in 5th grade from learning about highly concrete objects, like rocks and mammals, to concepts that are more abstract and harder to visualize, like cells and DNA. Hands-on projects like this help solidify the material for students.

“Watching my students make those observations and connections for the first time makes me intensely proud of them,” Ms. Feaver said. “The cell models looked amazing! Each student brought his or her own unique vision and creativity to the assignment.”
