7th Grade science class presents non-seed plants research
Students in Mr. Lunz's 7th grade science class have been studying different types of vascular seed plants in Wyoming and non-seed plants all over the world. Today, students presented their research on non-seed plants, which reproduce by forming spores and include mosses, ferns, liverworts, and horsetails.
Harper presented research on Pleopeltis polypodioides, also known as the "Resurrection Fern" due to its ability to withstand drought and "come back to life" when exposed to water again. Harper informed the class that "in 1997, the Resurrection Fern was taken into space aboard the Space Shuttle Discovery to watch the resurrection in zero gravity," she said.
Bente presented research on Abietinella abietina, which is a species of wiry fern-moss. "I liked learning about the adaptations this species has, which allow it to adapt to its surroundings in order to survive," she said.
Similarly, Roark presented research on Dicksonia antarctica, which is a soft tree fern native to Australia. He said an interesting fact about this species is that it grows to be a small tree, referencing that most ferns are small.
