Dear JH Classical Academy Parents,
Every Christmas for the past 85 years (not this year due to Covid) a tradition has continued at Radio City Music Hall in New York City. After the Rockettes captivate the audience with their synchronized dancing, the curtains rise for the final scene of the show: “The Living Nativity.” Live sheep, goats, and even camels, with shepherds, angels, and kings make Jesus’ birth come alive in a way that is dramatic and almost haunting. With this background, a clear screen descends in front of the stage and projects this poem: “One Solitary Life.” A voice booms:
He was born in an obscure village
the child of a peasant woman.
He grew up in another obscure village
where he worked in a carpenter shop
until he was thirty when public opinion turned against him.

He never wrote a book.
He never held an office.
He never went to college.
He never visited a big city.
He never traveled more than two hundred miles
from the place where he was born.
He did none of the things
usually associated with greatness.
He had no credentials but himself.
He was only thirty-three.
His friends ran away;
One of them denied him.
He was turned over to his enemies
and went through the mockery of a trial.
He was nailed to a cross between two thieves.
While dying, his executioners gambled for his clothing.
The only property he had on earth.
When he was dead,
He was laid in a borrowed grave
through the pity of a friend.
Nineteen centuries have come and gone
And today Jesus is the central figure of the human race
and the leader of mankind’s progress.
All the armies that have ever marched
All the navies that have ever sailed
All the parliaments that have ever sat
All the kings that ever reigned put together
Have not affected the life of mankind on earth
As powerfully as that one solitary life.

The mystery of Christ’s life is laid bare before the audience. It’s a story so simple, so ordinary, yet utterly incomprehensible and extraordinary. This beautiful poem sums up the humility and power of Jesus’ life: One solitary life. There is simplicity and complexity bound up in those three words.. It is perhaps the most scandalous Christian conviction to claim that an omniscient, mysterious, and eternal God became fully manifest in a human being. Love came down at Christmas.
This was a special week of school. We recorded our Ceremony of Carols for your viewing on Monday, December 21. Our high schoolers had a Christmas banquet at The Wort last night and caroled this morning at Legacy Lodge. Mentoring activities, cookie exchanges, and fun outdoor activities ended our final day of school for 2020. Many thanks to our remarkable faculty and staff, who are so dedicated to the profession of teaching. Many thanks to our families, who have been flexible and supportive during all these changes.
