Student Mentorship Program - First Annual Spirit Week
In order to foster increased community at our school, JH Classical Academy launched a new student mentorship program for the 2020-21 academic year. The inaugural mentors are Zachary and Rachel Hughes, who joined JHCA in the Fall of 2020. The Hughes’ goal for their roles as mentors is to “build relationships with students, encourage them, and make their school experience more fun,” Mr. Hughes said.
To this end, the Hughes have organized a number of activities with students outside of school. For high school students, these activities have included a kayaking trip in September, a cabin retreat in December, and the Christmas banquet just before break. Mr. Hughes says the trips for the older students were a good way of showing them the benefits of having a smaller high school community. “We don’t have some of the things the public school has but it’s what we can do that’s unique,” he said. Having opportunities for teachers and students to bond outside of the classroom is one of these unique benefits.
The mentorship program has also been established for the younger grades, as well. Mrs. Hughes has organized out-of-school activities for the 5th-, 6th- and 8th-grade girls. During these events, students baked cookies together and talked about Christmas and what they were grateful for this year. Mrs. Hughes said the goal was to “create relationships between grades to build a stronger community,” as well as to form a “relationship with a teacher that’s not academic, and to know they have additional support at school.”
The next mentor-organized event on the horizon is a school spirit week during upper school finals. Games and activities organized by the Hughes for the upper school students will be an opportunity for students to balance their hard work studying for finals with some extra fun. As Mr. Hughes says, “It’s great to see students engaged in school, but also to let them be free and have fun and adventures.” The goal of JHCA’s mentorship program is precisely that: to combine a rigorous academic agenda with creativity and community.
