Mr. Landis is contagiously optimistic. It's been said - and this not by a small few - that Mr. Landis has never complained in his life. And if you were to work with him - or indeed, be taught by him - you might very quickly attest this to be true.
This is not to mean that Mr. Landis doesn't run into his fair share of challenges. And of these there are always new ones, especially in this time of virtual learning.
"Science - the hands-on classes - have certainly been harder to teach virtually," Mr. Landis says. "It's more difficult to know who is following along during class and who might need extra time or attention. That's my new challenge."
Nonetheless, Mr. Landis finds that with creativity and resolve, these obstacles are surmountable. "We continue to read rich texts and work through the curriculum. The pace is good. And in some ways, our shorter class times have been a true positive. The students are engaged, and we get a lot done."
Mr. Landis finds positives beyond the classroom, as well." Lisa is getting into her last weeks of pregnancy. It's been a blessing to be with my family during this important time, to help Lisa with Lucas and housework."
Mr. Landis laughed when speaking of his new routine and how the changes have kept him busy. "There's a lot going on - diapers and naps for Lucas are part of the workday now."
Even as the mid-April snow tumbled from the sky beyond his window, Mr. Landis continued: "The weather is nice - Lisa, Lucas and I go for walks after class. It's good to be home with family. There's a lot to be grateful for."
