8th Grade Medieval History Geography Fair

On Monday February 11th, the 8th grade students presented their research on North African countries. This was the culmination of a geography unit in Ms. Koci's medieval history class. North Africa was the home to one of the greatest Mediterranean cities, Carthage, in modern day Tunisia. In late antiquity, the famous theologian St. Augustine was bishop of Hippo Regius in what is now Algeria. The Muslim invasion of North Africa in the late 7th century is one of the significant events of the early middle ages.
Armed with a knowledge of ancient North Africa, the 8th graders were each assigned a modern country in North Africa. They researched the GDP, culture, exports, religion, conflict, and current events of Mauritania, Western Sahara, Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Libya, and Egypt.

The students presented the information in both writing and pictures on a poster board—including citations! As parents, teachers, and classmates circled the eight stations around the room students invited questions, or grabbed their captive audience with an engaging fact. "Do you know that Western Sahara has the world's longest conveyer belt?" Harry asked. Other students introduced their research with a  fact about a foreign culture. "Public displays of affection are outlawed in Egypt," Hanne informed her audience. Other students raised awareness of the challenges facing people in their researched country. For example, Jordyn discussed how the average person in Sudan earns $4 a day.

Miss Koci said, "I was impressed by the quality of research that the 8th graders demonstrated in their presentations. Projects such as this help students become aware of the world around them."
