Neishabouri leads girl golfers to 4th place at state Jackson

Jacqueline Neishabouri began the fall sports season on the Broncs tennis team, and she finished the season as an All-State golfer.
The sophomore finished eighth in 3A during Friday and Saturday’s state championship tournament at Riverton Country Club. Neishabouri shot 53-over par for the tournament and beat the 11th-place golfer — the cutoff for the All-State list — by two strokes.
Neishabouri helped send Jackson coach Mike Witz out on a positive note as he announced he’ll retire after 19 years coaching the team.
“I am very excited for Jacqueline and for the way in which each of the girls stepped up to help propel the girls to one of the best team finishes ever,” Witz said. “This is the state championship team next year.”
The Jackson girls moved all the way up to third place on the second day before they eventually tied for fourth with Riverton. The two schools finished 91 strokes behind state champion Torrington.
The Broncs were aided by each of their four players Friday and Saturday en route to the top-five finish among the 13 schools that competed. Sophomore Vivian Herr missed All-State honors by two strokes and finished 56-over par, good for 12th place.
The next Broncs on the leaderboard were sophomore Martha Olson and senior Sarah Gregg, who tied for 25th place with scores of 93-over par. Jackson sophomore Sara White was 47-over par Friday but was forced to withdraw after the round due to injury.
“It was a phenomenal performance by a very young squad,” Witz said. “Four of the five girls are sophomores, and they played like seasoned veterans.”
The Jackson boys had a rough go of things, managing only 10th place out of 14 teams.
Lander won the championship by 10 strokes over runner-up Worland.
The future is bright for the team, though, and freshman Ridge Kling gave a preview of what’s to come. He finished 27th in the 66-golfer field with a two-round score of 39-over par. Kling stormed out of the gates in round one with an 87 before he added nine strokes on day two.
“Ridge was the star of the day,” Witz said of the freshman’s first round. “He was able to put the pressure and atmosphere behind him and play some excellent golf.”
Senior Zander Ponce placed 38th overall with a score of +49. Senior Adam Kroger (+54) placed 44th. Junior Oliver Orchard (+60) placed 48th. Senior Tommy Jennings (+69) finished 52nd.
“I felt bad for the boys,” Witz said. “Zander had battled a shoulder injury and was playing hurt, Adam and Tommy wanted their final round as seniors to be better. It was a great learning experience for Ridge and Oliver as they will be taking over leadership roles on the team next year.”
Witz retires with one state championship, won by the boys team in 2012.
"Retiring from coaching was almost harder than retiring from teaching," Witz said. "The relationships you develop with the athletes and their families is unique. Watching them develop as golfers, competitors, and individuals kept me coming back for more."
