Practical Arts: Building

During part of April and May the JH Classical Academy freshmen had the opportunity to get hands onbuilding experience. Mr. Jeff Zender coached the students over the course of four weeks in understanding the basic structure of a building.

On the first day of their project, students were also able to watch the milling process that turns a pine log into well-planed boards of useable lumber. The class was able to tour a partly constructed building to see its framework and to study the standard dimensions of studs and windows. They then spent time studying the geometry of centering windows and all the necessary supports and hardware needed to install them.

In the following sessions the students split into two groups. The first group went through the entire process of installing several windows. Mr. Zender instructed them at every step, from taking measurements, to building the support structure, to actually installing the window in the building. The second group spent their time making fancy birdhouses with a Great Gatsby inspired motif.

Everyone got to practice their hand at using power drills, hammers, screwdrivers, awls, and observing (from a safe distance) saws. At the end of the time with Mr. Zender the students were able to show off a trailer with three brand new windows and birdhouses designed and built from scratch that any bird would be proud to live in.
