1st Grade American History Fair

Last Friday you may have had the chance to spot Betsy Ross or George Washington in the first grade homeroom. The event was titled “Living Biographies of Founding Fathers & Mothers.” First grade history at JH Classical Academy spans from the discovery of America to Thomas Jefferson.

Some weeks before, each first grade student had chosen a character from Colonial history. Some chose more obscure figures such as Roger Williams, who founded Rhode Island, or Anne Hutchinson, an early advocate for the equality of women. Each student read at least two books about their character and then wrote a short presentation. On Friday, they dressed up in costume to present their character to their parents, teachers, and other students.

The students all discovered biographical information that surprised them. For instance, Sam Adams (Sam Zender) explained why he didn’t like to ride horses, and Ben Franklin (Harrison Scott) told everyone that he invented bifocals. It was an exciting afternoon full of history lessons the first grade is not likely to forget soon!
