Head of School Update, Saturday April 14, 2018

Dear JH Classical Academy Parents

Songs can stir powerful emotions that transport us back in time. Opening Ceremony on Monday morning began with listening to three glorious pieces by 16th Century British composer Thomas Tallis. My mind retrieved experiences singing that early polyphony in numerous cathedrals across England, Scotland, and Wales, recalling the beautiful reverberations and an important time in my life. Music suggests much about the society in which it is created, reflecting the culture and people of historical times. Students learned how Tallis adapted his compositions to fit the demands of rapidly shifting Royal tastes during a time of political and religious turmoil and how he influenced his pupil and fellow composer William Byrd.

I asked students and faculty to share musical memories from Spring Break that lifted their souls, inspired their hearts, or transported their minds. The varied and enthusiastic responses spanned from dancing and drumming around a fire pit in Morocco, to celebrating Easter Mass in the Vatican in Rome, to hearing a performance of Music through the Ages at the Museum of the Bible in Washington DC, to listening in darkness to an hour of Greek liturgal music in an Orthodox cathedral, to experiencing the South African tones of Lion King in New York City, to hearing a country song composed on the spot in Hillsboro, New Mexico. These musical experiences did indeed create memories, lift their souls, inspire their hearts and connect them to history, culture, and people. They recognized and experienced beauty. Great job, parents!

The focused study of art history, music theory, and their application enables a greater comprehension of our cultural past and aesthetic philosophies. Art and music didn’t appear in a vacuum. They are a product of wars, times of leisure, various royal courts, religious celebrations, and interactions with ideas. Classical education doesn’t merely seek to offer musical enrichment or form well-rounded individuals. We teach students that the manifestation of ideas and the embodiment of philosophical thought can be understood through art and music. We document how generations sought to find order and beauty in changing times and how music and art gave expression to their hearts when words were not enough.  We equip students with the tools to create their own expressions and to recognize God's greatness and give Him the honor and praise that is due.

Please come to Mr. Landis's parent education on our Bridge Math course on Tuesday afternoon.  Enjoy our new promotional video featuring Beauty in the Arts!
