Modeling Medieval Marvels in the 5th and 8th Grades

Upon walking into the 5th Grade classroom, visitors found themselves ensconced by models of the WhiteTower of London and Canterbury Cathedral constructed in various materials and sizes. The students transformed the room into a city of homemade historical structures. Joining together their studies of European History in the Middle Ages, Miss Koci’s 8th Grade Medieval History and Mr. Sawyer’s 5th Grade British History classes joined together to present a Medieval History Fair with a variety of cathedrals and castles iconic to Britain at the time.
Each student selected one of the historical buildings and built a model of the structure as well as researching the history of its construction and influence over the centuries. The 8th Grade students opened the fair by giving a short presentation indicating important events and dates about each of their projects. The 5th Grade students each created a poster board to present pictures of their chosen cathedral and the images they had worked from to build their models.

Following the formal presentations by the 8th Grade, each grade K-9th, as well as families, visited the class. Parents and students viewed each model, heard history from the students, and asked questions about the models themselves.

Much of the fair was dedicated to the students sharing their research and presenting information to a wide variety of age levels. The young historians took great pride in their work and in sharing their efforts with their families and fellow classmates.
