Head of School Update, Friday, 9 June, 2017

Dear JH Classical Academy Families,

Our 8th Graders headed to Washington DC today with chaperones Mrs. Birnie and Mr. Walter.  Their comprehensive tour of our Nation’s Capital includes a tour of Mt. Vernon; visits to the Lincoln, Vietnam, FDR and US Marine Memorials; Evensong at National Cathedral, touring the Air & Space Museum; meeting Congress woman Liz Cheney; lunch at the National Gallery; a visit to Arlington National Cemetery; and a guest speaker from International Justice Mission over dinner.  Please pray for safety, good weather, and wonderful fellowship as they enjoy this time together!
Results from your children’s Iowa Test of Basic Skills are headed home today in the backpack of the oldest child in your family.  For most students, we now have 3-years of data and we are extremely encouraged by the progress these students have made over that period of time.  More importantly, the test results give us confirmation that we know our students well.  The small class sizes allow teachers to care for and know every student in their class.

Here are a few highlights from the overall student body scores:
  1. The addition of the Bridge Math course in 6th Grade was clearly the right decision.  All 6th Graders increased math computation 3+ grade levels from the previous year.
  2. The 8th Grade Class scored in the 11th-13th+ years of school on all aspects of the test. That means our 8th Grade Class scored as juniors in high school, compared to the rest of the nation.
  3. 1/3 of our student body (or 24/76 students) scored in the 99th percentile on at least one section of the ITBS tests.
  4. 1/3 of our student body (or 25/76 students) scored in the 90th percentile and above on the combined language arts
  5. 59% of our school (or 45/76 students) scored in the 75th percentile or above in the combined math tests.  Our decision to add 10-minutes of time to math class this year and to add the math sprints made a big difference
  6. 13 students at JHCA scored in the 95% percentile or above on their combined language arts, combined math, and combined history/science tests.
  7. And additional 6 students scored in the 95% percentile or above on two of those combined tests.

After three years, we are finally creating our first videos to promote our school. KGB Video Company will be on campus Monday and Thursday to capture opening ceremony, lessons, interviews, recitations, chess, Latin and all that makes JHCA a special place.  They will capture moments at Graduation and Field Day too.

It is a busy week next week, so here are some reminders:
  1. Have your children dress nicely on Monday & Thursday for filming.
  2. There is no Lyceum on Thursday, due to our 8th Grade Graduation.
  3. Graduation Ceremony begins on Thursday, June 15 @ 5:30 PM.
  4. Yearbooks will be given to students who purchased them on Friday.
  5. Extra yearbooks are on sale through SmartTuition or contact Cindy.
  6. Students need to wear navy blue JHCA T-shirts for Field Day on Friday.
  7. Parents should come to End-of-Year BBQ on Friday from 12-1:00 PM.
This is our last week of school.  It has been an honor to serve you and our students.  I hope to see you at the BBQ this Friday.  We will continue our tradition of hearing joys and ideas from the student body.  I will also recognize parents that have volunteer over 20-hours this year to help our school.  And, our new Chef JB Park will be cooking his signature Korean BBQ!

I'm thrilled to annouce that Eliza Fite, our current Operations Manager, will become our Advancement Officer starting July 1, 2017.  Dr. Tony Jeffrey is moving to Jackson Hole in late July, for one year, to support our entire Deveopment Team as we build for the future.  Enjoy reading about both of them below.

Rest well this weekend,
