Head of School Update: Friday, January 27, 2017
It was such a thrill to launch 9th Grade at a faculty-led presentation last Tuesday afternoon. Our 9th Grade begins the Rhetoric phase of classical education, described well by Dorothy Sayers in her 1947 essay, The Lost Tools of Learning:
“The imagination – usually dormant during the Pert age – will reawaken, and prompt them to suspect the limitations of logic and reason. This means that they are passing into the Poetic age and are ready to embark on the study of Rhetoric. The doors of the storehouse of knowledge should now be thrown open for them to browse about as they will. The things once learned by rote will be seen in new contexts; the things once coldly analyzed can now be brought together to form a new synthesis; here and there a sudden insight will bring about that most exiting of all discoveries: the realization that truism is true.”
Our teachers share this vision and it was their constant drive and dedication that created this beautiful liberal arts program. Students will read great works of literature, create art in many mediums, play the piano keyboard, reason through geometry, and engage in practical arts. Most important, our young men and woman will continue on their journey towards a “portrait of a graduate:” virtuous scholars, equipped stewards, and humble citizens. We’ve been blessed with an enthusiastic response from current parents and already received NEW applications for 9th Grade students since our Tuesday presentation!
With all the growth we are experiencing, we hired a full-time Business & Operations Assistant who starts next Wednesday, February 1. Eliza Fite graduated from the Commerce and Business Administration School at the University of Alabama, with a major in finance and minor in economics. She moved to Jackson Hole in 2012 and enjoys the outdoors and the western lifestyle. Moving from personal wealth management into non-profit is something that excites Miss Fite and she is invested in the mission and future of JH Classical Academy. Please welcome Miss Fite when you see her, but she will be spending much of her time in our Wilson Office supporting Mrs. Lustfield.
Artists from the GTMF’s 2017 Winter Music Festival are active in our community performing concerts and
holding outreach programs during their stay in Jackson Hole. Our Academy was selected as a performance location and will hold an assembly for all students on Monday, February 6 at 11:00 AM. Benjamin Beilman will play the violin and Andrew Tyson the piano. All parents and relatives are welcome to join this enriching musical experience!

Next month, JHCA is launching our first Reading Rally. Detailed packets head home with students next Friday, February 10. The Rally will not only raise funds, give younger students more reading time to build proficiency and older students the pleasure of a good book, but it will help us promote the vision and values of our school to the community. Best of all, it brings families together to discover and enjoy great works of literature. At the end of last year, one of the greatest wishes of our students was more time to read!
