Lunch & Learn Series: How pursuing your passions can lead to your dream career

JH Classical Academy’s first “Lunch & Learn” for high school students was this week. Mr. Tattersall, a JHCA parent, came to speak about his career journey and answer questions. The goal of this series is to provide students with a glimpse into the professional world and what is available to them post graduation. During the meeting, students learned about a career in nursing, received practical career advice, and had the opportunity to ask questions.
Mr. Tattersall attributes his passions and various work experiences as the key to finding his dream career as a surgical nurse. “The body’s ability to heal and maintain, and my desire to help people, is what drove me into nursing,” he said.

According to Mr. Tattersall, the average person has 12 different jobs in their lifetime. Prior to discovering his love for nursing, Mr. Tattersall had a career in banking, real estate, and even worked as a ski patroller, each time going back to school for additional training. He encouraged our students to pursue their interests and to gain as much experience as they can, as early as they can. “I urge you to get jobs in the industry you might be interested in and see what you like firsthand,” he said.

Towards the end of his talk, Mr. Tattersall referenced mountain biking and advised students to focus on the experiences that are going to drive them forward. “In mountain biking, you look at where you want to go, not what you don’t want to hit. If you focus on where you don’t want to go, that will take your focus off. Be proactive; chase down those leads."
