Head of School Update: Tuesday, January 14, 2020

Dear JH Classical Academy Parents,

How do you describe classical education to a family inquiring about our school?

If I were to describe classical education in my own words, from my own experience, I would say that it is choosing a path of intentional learning and living. It is an age-appropriate journey of observing the world around you and making sense of your place in it. It encourages questioning. It examines desires. It requires virtue. It draws from the great thinkers of the past. It teaches us to encounter new information and assimilate that knowledge towards proper action. It allows one to dream and fail within a framework of values that leads to greater purpose and happiness. Classical education understands that intentional learning and living takes time, and the process is just as beautiful as the goal.
How do you describe the Christian influence at our school in connection to classical education?

I would say first and foremost that learning takes place in an environment where each student is valued, known, and loved, just as God created, knows, and loves us. We seek to find the balance between study and joy, diligence and curiosity in our learning expectations. As Christians, we recognize that in our humanity we often fail. We are not capable of virtue without the grace of God.  We teach students that problems can become opportunities. We encourage each other to learn and grow through life’s challenges. We are called to educate, not indoctrinate our students. Our faith gives us a desire to pursue what is true, beautiful, and good, and to use our talents and knowledge in service for others.

As we head into our admissions season, it is good to examine why you chose JH Classical Academy, what you value about our school, and how we can make this institution of excellence even better.  Here are two upcoming opportunities to join us:

Discover Classical Learning is this Thursday night, January 16, from 6-8 PM. I encourage you to come to deepen your understanding and renew your commitment to classical education. Our current students love this school, but constantly express a desire, and need, to journey alongside more friends. Please bring new families on Thursday night to hear the purpose of classical education and to experience the learning for themselves. Sixteen teachers will be on campus that night to share mini-lessons and answer questions over a dessert reception.

Advancing our Academy will be held over lunch from 12-1:00 PM on Wednesday, January 29. Each month a board member has committed to join me for a parent conversation on how we can grow in excellence and grace and adavance our Academy in the community.  Please come participate in these important discussions, before we embark on creating our 5-year strategic plan.

Thank you for journeying alongside me,
