Head of School Update: Monday, September 4, 2017

Dear JH Classical Academy Families,

The school year begins tomorrow! We have been preparing for several weeks, and the only missing element is having students in the building. We are so excited to greet our returning students and welcome our new students tomorrow for a true, good and beautiful year of learning.

I spent three days with this amazing group of teachers at our faculty retreat in Cody. We often say that classical education can be summarized in two words: human flourishing. But, what does human flourishing really mean? How do you recognize it? How do you create a culture to encourage it? How can you bring those from suffering into flourishing?  This was the topic of our retreat, amidst wonderful times of fellowship, trail rides, meals, searching for petrified wood in the river, skeet shooting, fly fishing, square dancing, journaling, resting and reading and more. (There’s never a dull moment with me!) Enjoy a small collage of our Cody Faculty Retreat.
Our teacher, Andy Crouch, likened flourishing to how God created the world with both order and abundance. He ordered the heavens, and filled them with abundant light, stars and planets. He created the deep seas, and then let them swarm with fish and other life. He created the earth, and produced every sort of animal to scurry across the land. Finally, he created man in his own image, and directed man to rule over the earth and seas—and to be fruitful and multiply. Order and abundance. Order and abundance. For those who learn by contrast: order without abundance is control; abundance without order is chaos.

Order and abundance are not opposites, but they are meant to be combined together in every life and in every community for flourishing. At our school, ordered classrooms for abundant learning; ordered terms lead to abundant knowledge; ordered expectations with abundant grace. We have deliberately and collaboratively built our program on the hope and promise of human flouring. It is a high calling, but I can tell you that this faculty is dedicated to the flourishing of your children. I believe you will find joy, alongside your children, as they gain mastery of new skills, engage in powerful ideas, and learn to care about each other and the world around them.

Please keep in good communication with our teachers. The parent-teacher-student triangle is what makes education successful. Thank you for partnering with us. When creating the 2nd in our series of promotional videos (below), it was clear that students love learning at Jackson Hole Classical Academy.

With appreciation,
